Northside ISD (NISD) is the largest school district in the San Antonio area — serving over 100,000 students across the west and northwest sides of the city. NISD's CBE program is one of the most well-documented in Texas: exact testing dates are published each year for both grade-level acceleration (K-8) and high-school-course acceleration.

This is an independent guide. Texas CBE™ is not affiliated with NISD. Confirm specifics with your campus counselor.

Northside ISD's CBE — the essentials

AspectNISD rule
Passing bar80% or higher per subject or semester course to award credit for acceleration
PurposesAcceleration; validation of home-school or non-accredited private/public school credit; recovery of credit for a failed course
Grade coverageK-12 enrolled students
K-8 acceleration ruleKindergarten through 8th-grade students may only accelerate out of one entire grade level, and must score 80% or higher in all four subject areas (math, social studies, language arts, science).
2026-2027 CBE datesJuly 11, 2026 · Aug 4-6, 2026 (MS Math Acceleration for new NISD students only) · Oct 24, 2026 · Mar 20, 2027 · May 22, 2027

The K-8 all-four-subjects rule

NISD's grade-acceleration policy is stricter than what many families expect. A K-8 student who wants to skip a grade must demonstrate 80%+ mastery in all four core subjects — math, language arts, science, social studies. Missing 80% in one subject means the grade-acceleration is denied, even if the other three are perfect.

This is intentional — grade acceleration is a big step, and NISD wants to verify readiness across the board.

The 2026-2027 testing calendar

  • July 11, 2026 — main summer session.
  • August 4-6, 2026 — MS Math Acceleration only, for students new to NISD.
  • October 24, 2026 — fall session.
  • March 20, 2027 — spring session.
  • May 22, 2027 — end-of-year session.

How NISD families typically use CBE

  1. MS Math Acceleration — for new-to-NISD students specifically, the August 4-6 window.
  2. Algebra 1 acceleration between 8th and 9th grade — main summer session.
  3. Grade-skip in K-8 — with the 80% × 4-subject requirement.
  4. Homeschool credit validation — NISD explicitly supports this purpose.
  5. Credit recovery for a failed course.
